Shiftless Toyota 4Runner

Q. Vincent, I have a 1988 Toyota 4 Runner. The other day I was at a stop light and I had my truck in neutral. When the light turned green I tried to shift from neutral to first but it would not engage in first or any other gear. Finally it went into second and I drove the rest of the way home in second gear.

When I turned the truck off I could engage in all the gears but when I tuned it back on it would not engage. Please tell me what is causing this.

Kind regards,
Dale

A. If this was a sudden loss with no shifting problems leading up to this, then I would have to think it is a problem with the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder.

First thing to do is check the clutch fluid level and top it off. Then go the slave cylinder and bleed it and see if that brings the clutch back. Pull the rubber boot around the slave push rod off too. I'll bet it's filled with fluid. If it is, replace it.

If there was no loss of fluid and the hydraulic system seems fine, then you will need a new clutch assembly.
