Explorer Steering Shake

Q. I have a 1995 Ford Explorer Sport with automatic transmission. I had the brakes repaired the other day, and when I was backing out of a tight space, I noticed that the car was shaking.

The mechanic drove it around and observed that the front wheels are shaking as you turn the steering wheel. When the car is in park, and you turn the steering wheel, you can see that the wheels do not turn smoothly, rather it is more of a jerking motion. The problem seems to occur at low RPM. I drove the car on the highway and did not observe a problem. The mechanic checked the fluid and belt and suspects it may be the rack and pinion steering.

Just for some background, I had an accident several years ago where the vehicle went about 3 feet into the air an landed on all four tires. Since then, the steering always seemed a little sloppy to me, but no one ever found a problem. Any ideas?

Thank you.

A. The last time I jumped three feet into the air, I came down on both feet running. That was when her husband came home unexpectedly.

The problem could be in the rack or the rack mounting bushings. You could also have a problem with the power steering pump as well. He needs to do a P/S pump pressure test to determine if the pump is good or not. It could also be something as simple as contaminated P/S fluid.

Ford has a special P/S system tester that can test the whole system. That would seem to be the efficient way of checking it and finding out exactly what's wrong.
