Engine/Transmission Swap
Q. Hello Vincent. I am e-mailing you to figure a problem out for my father. He has a 1995 Monte Carlo LS, 3.1, 4-speed automatic transmission. It's fuel-injected with ABS, P/S and A/C. The transmission went bad on it and the motor leaks oil. A friend told him to replace the valve stem seals and that would solve the oil leak.
He can't find a transmission in the junk-yard, but has a friend that gave him a 1994 Lumina with a 4-speed transmission and a 3.1. Will the transmission fit in the 1995 Monte Carlo? And if it doesn't, will the motor and transmission from the lumina work in the Monte Carlo? Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
PaulA. The transmissions are the same so you can swap them without a problem.
As for the engine, I don't see how replacing valve seals are going to repair an external oil leak, but maybe your friend knows something I don't. The basic engine is the same, but you'll have to swap the head, manifolds and a few other fittings. If you take the replacement engine down to short block and install the head and other parts from the old engine, you can use the Lumina engine.
