Another Explorer Heat Problem

Q. Sir, My father has a 1998 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 V6 engine. Auto trans, 24,000 miles, fuel injected, 4WABS, P/S, A/C and cruise. The problem is that he is unable to adjust the air temperature in the heating system. It is constantly hot.

There is a vacuum operated valve in the heater hose that only closes when MAX AIR is selected. I have referred to a 1991 to 1998 Haynes Manual and a 1999 to 2000 Haynes Manual and in both publications they refer to Operating Cables. There are no cables attached the temp control or to the duct work. The temp control is strictly electronic.

Now just to set the record straight I have owned a 1991 Explorer which had these cables. I now have a 1995 and a 1999 Explorer that DO NOT have operating cables on the temp controls. They too are electronic. The temp control on the dash rotates from cold to hot but does nothing to change the temp of the air. The blower works just fine and the directional control work okay. There are only three wires on the back of the temp control and they appear to go directly into a small white module in the to of the duct work just behind the glove box. I am assuming that there in a small motor under the module that controls the amount of air that can pass through the heater core. Without a wiring diagram I am not sure how to properly test the temp control or the wires leading to this module. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You, Jim

A. I just answered the same question for another person having the same problem. See Explorer Made Me Work for the answer.
