Jeep Cherokee Axle Joints
Q. Hi Vincent, I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4WD inline six which needed front axle U joints replaced. I have never replaced U joints before but all ways ready to try at least once. My problem is when I slide the axle shaft back into the axle tube (passenger side) I snapped the little plastic dust cover off.
I replaced the cover but three days later I could smell gear oil so I checked under finder well and oil was leaking from the axle tube were the dust cover is in place. I would think I clipped a seal but can't tell where the seal is. Is it up by the differential or should the seal be at the other end where the axle slide into the tube?
Went to my local dealer to by the seal but I was not sure if the salesman knew what he was doing because he kept trying to sell me a drive shaft seal that fits in the transfer case. Thanks for taking the time and looking forward to get my Jeep back on the road.
Thanks,
RobertA. I'm not sure what dust cover you are referring to either. I included a diagram here. Perhaps you can print it out, take it to your dealer and point out exactly what you need.
