Oxygen Sensor Prices

Q. Hi there, My service engine soon light came on yesterday, so I immediately took it in to get checked out. The mechanic at the local shop found that I needed to have my Oxygen Sensor replaced. He said to bring it to a dealer. I have a 1996 Pontiac Firefly with 138,000 kms.

I'm just wondering how much I should expect to pay to replace this and do I have to take it to a certified GM dealer or did the guy tell me this because he couldn't do the repair at his shop? Anyway, just wondering if you could give me a guess at how much this is going to run me so I don't get taken advantage of at the next repair shop!

Thanks,
Jessica

A. The cost of the O2 sensor depends if it is the front or rear sensor. The front O2 sensor, P/N 25162600, is $66.77 and the rear O2 sensor, P/N 12569553, is $134.29. The labor is about 0.5 to 1.0 hours to replace. Since the Firefly is not a US model, the prices I gave is for it's cousin, the Sunfire.

You certainly don't have to go to the dealer (prices I gave are dealer prices) and any decent shop can replace them, probably at a lower parts cost. Why this guy didn't want to do it? I don't know. Maybe he was too unsure of his diagnosis and by sending you to the dealer he was doing you a favor.
