Olds Cutlass Ciera DTC 42

Q. I have a 1987 Olds Cutlass Ciera sedan. 3.8 liter fuel injected, automatic transmission, A/C, P/S, P/B, 170,000 miles. The car will run maybe ½ a block or sometimes two or three days then it will cough and stop and cannot be restarted. If it sits perhaps 30 minutes it will restart and run as before. I have changed the following:

Electronic brain
EGR
Oxygen sensor
Camshaft sensor
Spark plug wires
Vacuum lines
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Battery
Coil pack plus the ignition module beneath it.

A code light does come on saying check code 42. Can you enlighten me?

Rande

A. Sounds like you left out the crank sensor. It's mounted behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft. It just may be the problem. After all the money you spent guessing, don't you think it would have been cheaper to take it to a shop?
