Volkswagen Jetta Starter Lock Out

Q. Hello, I have just inherited a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta, standard transmission. It failed inspection because "car starts without pressing the clutch." The inspection station guy said maybe this is okay for the 1996 model but they need something to verify. I called Volkswagen customer services and they weren't any help.

I'm not sure they understood what I was asking for. Simply put, in the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta is there a part that would prevent the car from starting unless the clutch was pressed? Hope you can help.

Thank you,
Eileen

A. Yes Eileen, there is a system that requires the clutch be depressed in order to start the vehicle. As a running change, starting with 05/96 production, manual transmission vehicles have a lock-out feature that prevents starter operation unless the clutch pedal is depressed.

The Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch is located on the clutch pedal bracket, above the clutch vacuum vent valve switch.
