Jimmy Has Weird Problems

Q. 1998 GMC Jimmy SLS 2wd, 4.3 liter V-6, 4 speed automatic. Problem: When air conditioner is on and I turn the fan on, the fan will begin to cut on and off and eventually quits completely and then the ABS and brake light on the instrument panel will come on. I can turn the fan and A/C off and lights go out.

This doesn't happen each time, only on occasion. Also, oil pressure gauge has begun to fluctuate between 20 and 60, low when brakes are applied, high when I accelerate gas. Mechanic replaced alternator thinking it may be a loss in power, that did not work (he's going to put the old one back on and return the new one and I am so grateful). If compressor on A/C is bad could it cause the brake lights to come on? Sensitive issue I know, just wish they'd make them less complicated. Any help or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Victoria

A. Sounds like it could be a low voltage problem or a short between those circuits involved. Check for acid leaking on the positive battery cable and corroding the cable. If it's okay, I would recommend a GM dealer to look at it, they have the correct scan tool to see what's going on and access to the service information. Good luck.
