Intrepid Noise

Q. Hello, I have a 1994 Dodge Intrepid, 6 cyl., automatic, 87,000, Fuel injection, ABS brakes, P/S, air-currently not working. I just noticed a whirring sound when the gas pedal is accelerated and the sound goes down as I slow down.

According to the trouble-shooting page there are 4 possibilities. Any other suggestions?

Krista

A. Those are the most likely causes, there are others as well. It is possible a fan belt is making the noise as well, Another possibility is that the idler pulley for the serpentine belt is bad and causing the noise. I have seen the idler pulleys break and rub against the front of the engine as well.

Engine noises can be tough to find. One good way to eliminate a belt related noise is to remove the belt, start the engine and if the noise goes away, it is belt related or one of the units driven by the belt. If the noise does not go away, then it is something internal of the engine.
