Painting Honda Civic Brake Drums

Q. I have a question. My drums are losing their paint. They have surface rust and are not very appealing anymore. I have a 2000 Honda Civic Coupe and would like to change the color of the rear brake drums. The pads are new and the drums look like crap through the alloy wheels. What is a proper way of doing so?

Thank you,
Michael

Painting Honda Civic Brake Drums

A. The best way to do it is to sand blast the drums to remove the rust. Then wash them down with lacquer thinner to make sure there is no dust or grease on them. Then use a high temperature paint such as Krylon®. Do several light coats rather than one or two heavy coats.

If you want a bit of a gloss, give them a couple of coats of a high gloss clear coat. Be sure not to get any paint on the area of the drum the wheel contacts. If you do, the paint will wear off and the wheel will loosen up and could, potentially, fall off.
