Chrysler LHS Sun Load Sensor

Q. Hello Vincent, I'm sure you get all kinds of email about technical problems but I'm hoping you can deal with this one. I own a 1997 Chrysler LHS with auto headlamps and auto temperature control. As near as I can figure out, both units make use of a "sunlight sensor" to decide when to turn on the headlights or in the case of the ATC to crank the air conditioning up a notch.

My questions are:

  1. Am I right so far?
  2. Is it the same sensor for both?
  3. And if so is it located on top of the dash in the same little pod that houses the red flashing light for the security system?

I suspect something in this area is malfunctioning since the headlights (in the automatic mode) come on in broad daylight. I have no way of knowing whether the temperature control is also being affected.

Would you know if this sort of thing is likely to be the sensor itself or am I likely looking at something in the control module somewhere. My Haynes manual doesn't cover this area and I'm not sure whether I should spring for a factory shop manual. I could of course go like a lamb to my local dealer to get fleeced but I'm a pretty good troubleshooter providing I have enough information. Any ideas?

Best,
Hank
