Neon Intermittent No Start

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I, and my dealership, are having problems diagnosing a problem with my 1997 Dodge Neon ACR. Build Date: 10/10/96 in Bel., Ill. 2.0 DOHC, manual 5 speed, 81,000 miles, EFI.

The problem is an intermittent stalling with engine warm and slowing to a stop or decelerating. The problems have produced no error codes, lights on ignition check or tones at start up. All connections and cables have been checked. Battery is okay, posts are clean. PCM/ECU was replaced yesterday with factory part.

There has been a slight smell of electrical smoke, very faint, each time. The car will restart after approximately 2-3 minutes. The dealership says that it acts as if it is going into "theft mode" however as they have stated my car is not equipped with any anti-theft devices. Any help will be much appreciated.

A. If there is a definite smell of wire burning, I would start getting into the wiring harnesses and check them out very carefully. There is a good possibility there is a pinched or chaffed wire rubbing against a ground. It is going to be a lot of work, but at this point I see no other option.
