Ford Ranger Cruise Control Problems

Q. The cruise control has quit working. In doing so it first became intermittent, it would some times work and at other times would not. During this period of intermittent operation if it engaged it worked perfectly through the drive. Now it does not work at all, it will not engage. I have inspected the vacuum hoses connected to the servo, they look good.

Ford Ranger Cruise Control Problems

I have removed the sensor on the rear axle, it looked good and is magnetized. How can I locate the problem with this system? I have access to standard electronic equipment, DVMs, scope.

  • 1994 Ford Ranger
  • 3.0 liter V-6
  • Manual transmission
  • 150,000 miles
  • P/S, A/C, cruise control

Thanks...

A. Most commonly the activation switches get corroded and lose their ability to make contact. They are simple carbon to copper contacts and it doesn’t take much to keep the little carbon contacts from completing the brass or copper circuits. My first endeavor would be to clean them with some good contact cleaner.
