Continental A/C Problems

Q. 1989 Lincoln Continental, V-6, all the bells and whistles. 113,000 miles. A/C problems. Normally on first start the A/C works fine. The problem starts after the car has been driven for a while, then shut off for a while. Such as going shopping. On start up the A/C comes out cold for a few seconds, then turns hot and the fan speeds up.

Sometimes this can be corrected by turning off the ignition and restarting the car. Sometimes it cannot. I also sometimes hear a couple of noises behind the control panel. One sounds like a switch clicking off and on. The other sounds like a motor turning a shaft and having a hard time at it. This car has so many sensors and controls that I don't know where to start. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
John

A. The first thing we should do is to pull the DTCs and see what we have stored.

The control assembly will detect electrical malfunctions occurring during the self test. Ensure that the engine is warm (at least 120° F coolant temperature). To display the error codes for the malfunction detected, initiate the self test by pushing OFF and FLOOR simultaneously and then AUTO within two seconds. The test may run as long as 20 seconds, during which time the display will be blank.

Error Code Detected Condition
01 Replace Control Head
02 Blend Door Malfunction
03 In-car Temp Sensor Open or Short
04 Ambient Temp Sensor Open or Short
05 Sunload Sensor Short
888 No Failures
