Questions and Answers
I had not taken it out of gear, but I had no gears. No reverse or forward gears. It made no noise before or a warning of any kind. There was no popping or grinding, it just has no gears. Someone where I had it towed, said that he has another one there with the same problem. Could you give me any hints as to what might have happened? It seems like it might be electrical or a fuse or something like that. I would appreciate any advice you can give me.
Escort Has No Gears
Q. I have a 1993 Ford Escort wagon. It has about 40 thousand miles on the motor and transmission. Last week I was driving along with no problems and suddenly the car sounded like I had taken it out of gear with the accelerator still down.
Thank you,
MaryA. It doesn't sound electrical, more like a mechanical problem. The first thing I would suspect is the transmission oil pump. That supplies the hydraulic pressure to actually work the transmission. There was a TSB issued on the pump drive shaft being ¾" too short, but I don't know for sure if it applies to your specific transmission. Checking the shaft itself will require the removal of the transmission but a transmission shop can check the pump pressure with a pressure gauge and see if this is the problem.
