Jeep Cherokee No Hot Start
Q. Hi, I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4. It has a 4.0 liter, straight six engine with fuel injection. Also has an automatic transmission with about 107,000 miles. My problem is that the fuel pump does not always get power. If the vehicle has been sitting for a while, it will start. As I put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position, initially I will hear the electric fuel pump start to hum.
If I have been driving the vehicle and turn it off, it will not allow me to start it again for quite a while. I don't hear the fuel pump as it is not getting power. The fuel pump is new as with the fuel relay switch. It has also received a recent tune up. It works fine as long as there is a long period of time (hours) in between starts. It does not allow me to run errands etc. How can I fix this problem?
A. The first thing we need to do is to pull any codes stored in the computer to see if they lead us anywhere. If there are no codes set, then I would guess the most likely culprit is the Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay. The ASD is located in the Power Distribution Box next to the battery.
