Ford Wheel Bearing Recall

Q. Hi, my name is Kimberly and I am the owner of a 2000 Ford Focus. I recently brought my car in for the recall on the rear wheel. The problem with the rear wheel occurs after the hub-retaining nut that secures the rear wheel bearings become loose.

My question is as a result of this could my rear brakes have to be replaced? The reason I am asking is because the dealer said the brakes had to be replaced because of my own wear and tear. Something I do not believe on a new car. If you could please respond it would be great.

Thanks so much,
Kimberly

A. The key words here are "normal wear and tear." If the brake shoes are worn equally between the front and rear shoes and on the left and right sides, then yes, that is normal wear and tear. If the shoes are worn on the edges as a result of the loose wheel bearings, then I feel they should be replaced as part of the recall.

I do have a copy of the recall bulletin and it does not say anything about replacing the shoes as part of the recall. Perhaps Ford will amend this bulletin to include new shoes, but I wouldn't count on it.
