Chevy Lumina Euro Transmission

Q. I have a 1990 Chevy Lumina Euro, 3.1 liter V-6 automatic transmission with 168,000 miles. The transmission is acting up when cold, and only cold. And only within 10 or 15 minutes of driving. When I stop at a traffic light, the transmission goes into neutral. I usually have to grab the shift and move into neutral or reverse very quickly, and back into drive, and it drops back into gear quietly.

This will happen once or twice until fully heated up, and then the car runs perfect. No problems at all. The transmission works perfectly after it is driven for 15 minutes or so. It started four weeks ago, and I just had the filter and gasket changed a few days ago.

Overall performance seems to have been improved, but the problem did not go away. Also, I have noticed when I start it in the morning; sometimes it will not go into reverse or drive. When this occurs, I usually wait 30 seconds to a minute, and it will be okay. I'm planning on taking it in to a transmission shop soon. I wanted your opinion first.

Thank you,
John

A. Transmission shop or scrap yard, take your pick. Used or rebuilt, both are reasonable choices.
