Engine Cleaning

Q. Hi Vincent, Ethanol sounds great! I don't understand why there is no wide use of this alternate fuel. That being said, where would I go get some? I'm in N.J. and will any of the local gas stations offer 10% Ethanol gasoline?

On another note, I was wondering what the best way to clean under the hood is. I've taken up an interest in performance modification (I drive a Honda Civic, go figure) and just opened up my hood recently. I've almost never looked under the hood before that.

Anyway, needless to say, it was naaaa-sty in there. Being a novice (that's an overstatement), I am willing to start very slowly. However, I thought in order to do anything in there, a little cleanup was necessary. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

A. I think you'll see N.J. catching up soon with ethanol blended gasoline soon. In fact I'm surprised they haven't done so already. There were stories of it coming shortly when I left there about six years ago. With all the corn that's grown in Jersey, and New Jersey has the best corn in the world, you would think that it would be a natural. Well, maybe they shouldn't waste such good corn for fuel. They can use Iowa corn instead.

I use Gunk engine cleaner to clean my engines. It's simple to use and washes right off. Basically you warm the engine up and spray it on, making sure all airways are sealed so no water can get inside the engine. Use about half the can and reapply it after 10 minutes or so. You can use a parts brush and dig into the really heavy stuff. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and just hose it off. If there is any dirty spots left over, I use Zep brake cleaner to hit those spots and when the engine dries, I'll use another can of Gunk and do it all over again. left over
