Can't Stop A 1966 Wildcat

Q. I was wondering if you could help me. I have a 1966 Buick Wildcat and the brakes aren't working right. I seen on your site that there can be many different things wrong. I seen one that sounds like what my car is doing. It is the problem where the car won't hardly stop, you have to press really hard to get it to stop and when it is stopped it doesn't feel like it will stay like that.

Also when you press on the brakes you can hear air, like pressure. Is there any advice that you could give? I don't want to spend a lot of money on the wrong part.

Thank You, Brandi

A. A bad power brake vacuum booster will do this. The air noise you hear is the clue here. When you step on brakes there is a vacuum booster that assists for power brakes. If it had a leak inside it would make noise and affect the brakes.
