Jeep Cherokee Seat Belts
Q. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I'm having a problem with the seat belt indicator buzzer and warning light. Normally it's supposed to operate as follows: When the ignition key is turned, whether far enough to start the engine or just to the accessories position, a buzzer will sound and remain on until the driver's seat belt is fastened or the driver's door is closed.
A red warning light will also go on as well until either of those events happen. The problem I'm having is that the buzzer comes on after I turn the ignition key, but won't go off until I fasten the seat belt (with or without the door closed) and the seat belt warning light remains on continuously and never shuts off. Does the problem rest in a relay or a bad connection in a wire running to the seat belt. I'm stumped. Please help.
Thanks...
A. The system is pretty basic. You have the seat belt switch which is on the right side of the seats and the Chime Module.
The switch is easy to test with an ohmmeter. Unplug it and hook up your ohmmeter to the switch. It should read continuity with the seat belt buckled and open with the seat belt unbuckled.
Also, with the key on, you should have power at the red wire on the seat belt connector. If this checks out good, then the problem is with the Chime Module.
