Metro Blowing Smoke

Q. Hi Mr. Ciulla! First, I want to congratulate you for this really helpful page!

I'm not speak English so, I'm gonna try! Please be patient!

I'm having a problem with my Geo Metro 1993 (3 cylinders, 1000 cc3). When I'm driving up-hill the CHECK ENGINE light turns. But, this is only when I'm driving up-hill!

Usually, there is no change associated in the car, but sometimes, at this situation it appears the car does not run as well as it should. It appears to decrease its "power" and runs slowly. Today, when I was driving up-hill there was also white fumes from the exhaust that "disappear" when the road becomes flat or down-hill.

Also, the oil sealer for the transmission oil should be replace it because there is a leak.

Thank you and I appreciate your help!

A. For someone who doesn't speak english Mónica, you did very well. If it is easier for you, you can send me your question in Spanish. I have many Spanish-speaking friends who can translate it for me.

The white smoke from the exhaust would seem to indicate that the cylinder head gasket is pretty well shot. The Check Engine light coming on would tend to confirm this. I would take it into a shop and have it checked as soon as possible to avoid doing irreparable damage to the engine.

As for the transmission leak, I'm not sure which seal you mean or if the transmission pan gasket is leaking. In any event having the leak fixed would neither be difficult or expensive.
