Screeching Taurus
Q. Hello, I have an extremely reliable 1992 Ford Taurus, 3.0 liter engine, automatic and A/C that just turned 300,000 kms. Recently, it started making a loud screeching noise. It occurs only during startup and not all the time. Cold weather seems to make it more frequent.
When it happens I usually shut the car off and restart it and it's okay. When I shut the car off I notice the noise will sometimes continue for a short period like something is winding down. Any ideas?
A. Wow, this is a good one. Normally a sound when you first start the engine is due to bad fan belts. But the "winding down" sound is something I would have to hear to be able to offer any kind of guess.
