Questions and Answers

Couple Of Jetta Questions

Q. Hello Vincent, Question One: Driver side door will not open with key. Key will open doors on the passenger side door. Can this be a motor in the driver side door? What is the approximate cost and labor hours expected?

Question Two: I think a new O2 Sensor is needed? My Jetta fluctuates when idling and occasionally looses power on the highway. It will temporarily lose power as if trying to breath. It's the O2 Sensor right? I would appreciate approx cost for the part and labor hours? I have worked on several cars and consider myself an intermediate car fixer. Can I replace the O2 Sensor myself?

1996 VW Jetta GL
4 cylinder 2.0 Liter
5-speed Manual transmission
76,000
Fuel Injected

Sincerely,
Patrick

A. Question One: If it is just the drivers side outside door lock and it works from the inside and the other doors are okay, then the problem is most likely the lock linkage. The rod going from the lock cylinder to the lock mechanism probably fell off or one of the plastic retainers are broken. You'll have to take the inner door panel off to check and repair it.

Question Two: It could be the O2 sensor, but that usually throws a code and turns on the MIL. I think, from the symptoms, it is more likely the fuel filter is getting clogged and needs replacing. I would suggest replacing the fuel filter before replacing the O2 sensor.
