Repairing A Control Unit

Q. Sir, I am an electronics engineering technician and have been working for the same company for the past twenty one years, recently my cousin who is a mechanic asked me to check out a circuit board that came from an automatic transmission control unit.

Not knowing how the circuit works I was unable to check it properly, I did change some capacitors that were bad during a capacitance test and was lucky because the unit worked. Ever since I have had numerous request for this type of repair service which I have had to turn down.

I would like to work for myself and see this as a great opportunity to do so. Please can you recommend some books or place where I can learn about these automobile computer control units?

Thank you,
Respectfully,
Francis

A. I would think there would be a huge market for a service like you have in mind. If I had an option of buying a new or reconditioned unit for $1000.00 or having one repaired for $200.00, I would go for the repair. With the number of control units in a modern car and the cost of replacements, a repair service would seem, to me anyway, a sensible option.

Unfortunately there is no one place where you can get information such as you need. Nor is there any place where you can get schematics of the units themselves. You can get wiring diagrams for systems that have control units and, perhaps, deduce what the unit does based on that information. The best place to get wiring diagrams and descriptions of what the particular control unit does is to get the factory service manuals from a dealer. This would have the most complete information available.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck in this endeavor. If you do get it off the ground, let me know. I would definitely become a customer.
