Questions and Answers
If I select D which is third gear the rpm stays the same, if I go back to OD it will not go back into over drive with the lower rpms. The truck usually stays in OD when cold but will not return after running for about 15 mins. Have any suggestions, is a transmission overhaul needed? Fluid is up to normal level.
No Ranger OD
Q. Hi; I think I'm having a transmission problem on my 1990 Ford Ranger 6cyl. 4 liter with auto trans. At cruise on the freeway @2000 rpm in Over drive "OD" the rpm suddenly changes to 3000 to maintain about 60 mph.
Thanks,
BobA. There is the possibility of an internal problem, but from what you describe, I have a feeling it may just need an adjustment.
Overdrive or 4th gear is actuated by a band. This band grips a drum inside the transmission giving you 4th gear. There is a procedure for adjusting this band, but I would only recommend it be done by an experienced transmission technician.
There is also one or two, depending on the transmission, solenoids that are not working. It is possible you have an external electrical problem. Again, something for an experienced transmission technician.
I would say the there's a better than 80% chance it's one or the other and not something actually wrong internally.
