Stalling Samurai
Q. My Suzuki Samurai is randomly shutting off while driving. After it shuts down you can smell a lot of gas and if you let it sit for a couple minutes it starts right back up. Sometimes it will run for a week without doing it. sometimes it will do it three times a day. I had it in to the repair shop and they said that it was the intake manifold gasket leaking, that it had only 6 pounds of vacuum.
They replaced the gasket and said that the vacuum was up to 14 pounds. There was a noticeable difference in performance it ran way smoother and idled much better. But about a mile from the shop it died again. I took it back and they kept it for a couple more days and said they drove it all over and it didn't die on them.
They said if they can't get it to stall on them they can't fix it. I have tried new plugs, wires, air filter, and cleaning the carburetor but it still does it. After the new gasket it starts up right away after it dies and you don't have to wait. But the gas smell is still there.

RyanA. One thing I would check is the EGR system. Make sure that the EGR valve is not sticking open and all the vacuum switches are working properly.
If that is okay, then I would have to start looking at the possibility of a rebuilt carburetor.
