Shhh... Baby's Sleeping

Q. I have a 1993 Nissan pickup, 4 cylinder, automatic with overdrive. I've asked several people and searched your site but no one seems to know the answer. Here's the problem. Whenever I start the truck, especially after it's been sitting overnight, it makes a noise that sounds like air blowing, or like a "shhh" sound for a few seconds after it starts, then it goes away.

The truck seems to be fine everywhere else. I recently had the transmission re-built, the drive belts replaced, and a tune-up done. Also, I recently switched to a semi-synthetic oil. Any ideas?

A. Without hearing the noise I would have to guess what you're hearing is the cooling fan. The fan clutch will engage for a few seconds after the engine starts. When the clutch is engaged the fan does make kind of like a wind type noise.
