Low Rider

Q. I have a question regarding the suspension system on my car. I have a 1994 Ford Escort LX Hatchback with struts on all 4 corners. I am considering lowering the suspension by having Arospeed or Chikara lowering springs installed.

However I have a friend who has the same model of car that I own who dropped his in excess of 5 inches by simply REMOVING the springs all together. What are the possible down sides to doing this? I have already had one mechanic tell me that doing that could cause irreversible damage to the strut towers and ruin the struts, however the guy who did it to his car works at a body shop/performance customs shop and says it has not damaged his and will not damage mine.

I want to get a few more opinions before I get this drastic of a thing done to my car, I would appreciate any information you could give me.

Thanks!
Jeff

A. Add me to the negative column. I would never remove all four springs from a car for any reason except to replace them. It is dangerous, not to mention harmful to the basic structure of the car.

I want a pound of whatever your friend was smoking when he did that to his car. He may work in a performance shop, but that does not mean he knows what he's doing. I used to work for IBM, that didn't make me a computer expert.

If you want to lower your ride, I would go with the lowering springs. You might want to pick up Low Rider magazine, they are a good source for this type of project.
