Over Full Transmission
Q. Hello there, I had a transmission oil change more than a year ago. I checked my transmission oil while car was running and it is WAY overfilled by what might be 2 quarts at least. It's been like this for about 17 months.
Can this in any way harm anything? I called the place that did the change and they told me not to worry about anything. But, I'm not sure I think it can be good for the car. Can you tell me what you think? Can it damage anything? Or affect car performance, etc?
Thanks very much for your answer,
BarbaraA. I don't think it was that much over, there just isn't enough room for two quarts over.
At any rate it can damage a transmission. If there is too much fluid, it may begin to foam, like the head on a beer, and this air circulating through the transmission can damage the friction material in the transmission. The fact that it still operates normally would seem to indicate that the transmission is okay. It may or may not affect the performance of the car.
I would bring it in for a service and make sure the level is at the full mark on the dipstick. And maybe check the level more than once every 17 months, please.
