Honda Accord Vehicle Speed Sensor

Q. Hello, My Check Engine Light is on in my 1995 Honda Accord EX. The code reads speed sensor malfunction. I purchased a used speed sensor and had it installed but the light came back on. Since then, a few thousand miles, the light has gone off and come on again a few times.

When the light is off, the car runs fine. When the light is on, it hesitates a little at about 60 to 65mph. I also have some rough shifting at low speeds. Not sure if this is related. What do you suggest?

  • 1995 Honda Accord EX
  • 2.2 liter V-6
  • Automatic transmission
  • 150,000 miles
  • Fuel Injection
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control

Thanks!

A. The code number would have been helpful here. But if you say the code was for a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) then that is what it is. But keep in mind that it is the VSS circuit, and not necessarily a bad VSS.

With the key in the ON position, You should have battery voltage (B+) at the yellow wire of the VSS. If not, you have a break in the yellow wire or fuse number 1 is bad. Check the black wire for ground. Jack the left wheel off the ground. Turn the key ON and slowly rotate the wheel in the forward direction. The voltage at the orange wire should go pulse from 0 to 5 volts. If it does the VSS is good.

I don't think I would have too much faith in a used VSS.
