Pontiac Grand Prix Fuel Gauge

Q. I have been reading your site for hours. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix, 3800. My fuel gauge sits in the full position when the car is running and in park, immediately upon shifting into drive it goes to empty. Shift it to neutral, it goes to full. It never sits any where except in either the full or empty position. it seems like some sort of vacuum problem. Any ideas?

Pontiac Grand Prix Fuel Gauge

A. I highly doubt that this is a vacuum problem. This gauge is electronic. You may have a short that only presents itself when you move the shift lever. GM has had a lot of trouble with fuel gauges lately. It may need a new sender unit. The fuel eats away the circuit boards in the tank. Try turning on key and wiggle the car side to side to see if you can make it do it. This will slosh the fuel. If so, I bet it's the sender.
