DeVille Starts Funny

Q. I have a 1986 Cadillac DeVille. In order to start it I have to lower the tilt wheel all the way. What causes this, how much (approximately) will it cost to repair, and if not repaired will it fail completely?

If it does fail, can I jumper the two connections on the starter to start the car? The car electrical system is activated when I turn on the ignition switch, regardless of the position of the tilt wheel.

Thanks,
Tom

A. It sounds to me like there is a wire or harness that is shorting out or, more likely, the linkage to the ignition switch may be bent or distorted.

The cost of the repair depends on what's wrong. It could be as simple as taping over a chaffed wire or as expensive as replacing an ignition switch. The only way to tell is to open up the steering column and visually inspecting the wiring and linkage to see where the problem lies.

It's not going to get any better, and it certainly won't fix itself. I do not recommend jumping the starter contacts, but it is an option if all else fails.
