Chevy Tahoe Loses Power And Dies
Q. Vincent!!! I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe with 150,000 miles. 350 CID. Engine Code R When driving and usually when there is a load on the engine it will start slowing down and then just quit running. The more Throttle you give the worse it is. This will happen suddenly especially when after driving it all day and it has been running fine.
When engine quits it restarts easily when parked and revs okay but when you take back off and put a load on it, only a very little throttle can be applied. Too much throttle and the engine dies. Occasionally engine backfires. Once this starts it will continue until with many stops and starts you finally make it home.
After letting it sit all night and starting it the next day it will run fine, usually for a day or two and then you will start having the problem all over again.
When this happens the Engine Codes you get are either or both:
- DTC P0131 HO2S Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1
- DTC P0151 HO2S Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1
In the last three months before this problem started I had to replace the fuel pump. While replacing the pump I went ahead and replaced:
- Fuel Filter
- Oil pressure sensor / Fuel pump switch
- Spark Plugs
- Spark Plug Wires
- Distributor Cap
- Distributor Rotor
After problem I have replaced.
- EGR Valve (Did get a code once On EGR. DTC P1406 EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit)
- Both Oxygen Sensors
- Map Sensor
Do you have any idea what my problem is?
Thanks!!!!!
A. A fuel pressure gauge installed on it will at least tell you if you are dropping fuel pressure. Sounds like it could be spark related though. Maybe the coil or the module is cutting out. These items are usually temperature sensitive when they have problems. Also you could try to lightly spritz some water onto the coil to see if problem is magnified.
