Chevy Corvette Won't Start

Q. Hi Vincent! I love your column on About.com. It has helped me out greatly in the past. I have a new problem and was hoping maybe you could give me some insight.

  • 1989 Chevy Corvette
  • Don't know engine size, sorry!
  • Automatic transmission
  • 117,000 miles
  • Fuel Injection
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S - A/C - Cruise control
  • Rack and pinion steering

Chevy Corvette Won't Start

I had a MSD ignition installed and it has been working fine. However, sometimes just for the heck of it, the darn car will not turn over. This has happened in the past, but usually within 20 to 30 minutes it will start without any problems!

I am thinking it is either one of the following problems:
MSD Ignition
OR
the key is bad
OR
some security feature that is going wrong.

The key to start the car is in pretty rough shape. Could this cause the problem? The car runs great, but does this "I won't start" for you routine. It is happening more and more. Now, it will not start at all however the lights, dials, etc all turn on when trying to start it. Any help you can give me would be appreciated!

Thanks!!
Brigette

A. You own a Vette and don't know the engine size?? Most Vette owners know everything about Vettes!! Just kidding. Sounds like the ignition key may be the problem, not just the key but the lock cylinder that it goes into. They have real fine wires in it to read that little pellet on the key. After years of turning on key the wires break. If you get a new GM lock cylinder it will come without pellet keys. They will need to "read" the old pellet and match two new keys to that code.
