Oil Pan Replacement
Q. Hi Vince, I have a 1992 Honda Civic LX 1.5 liter manual transmission and fuel injected with 195,000 kms on it. I just replaced my timing belt and water pump a couple of days ago and performed an oil change as well. All of them were done at Honda dealership and cost me at $460.00 CDN.
My problem goes like this, they are advising me to replace my oil pan as well as the gasket because according to them the thread on my oil pan bolt is already stripped and the only solution was to replace the whole pan at a total cost in the $400.00 CDN range!
I did the previous oil change but I did noticed any damaged on the thread, how in the world could the threads have come off? Is this normal? Is this the only solution? Can I just replaced the old drain plug with a new one to make a better thread? What's the size of the drain plug for my car model?
Thanks again.
JeffA. Replacing the oil pan to repair damaged drain plug threads is a rather drastic, last resort procedure. There are many thread repair products on the market to repair this problem. They work pretty well and so far I have never needed to replace an oil pan because of damaged threads.
I would find a local shop who is willing to do a repair such as this and it won't cost nearly as much as replacing the oil pan.
