Chrysler LeBaron Jerks And Goes

Q. Hello Mr Ciulla, My boyfriend has a 1989 Chrysler LeBaron GTS 4 cylinder turbo. The car is in better condition than most, since there are at least a million of them on the road. Here is the problem: the car starts perfectly, idles effortlessly. no misses, no hesitation. When taking off normally, the car increases speed, with no problems.

Chrysler LeBaron Jerks On Hard Acceleration

However, when he decides to take off quickly, and the gas pedal is depressed more than normal, the car jerks, then goes, then jerks, then goes until he lets off the gas and proceeds at a normal rate of speed. I hear vacuum at times. I told him I thought that it was running too rich, and that the fuel system needed to be reconfigured. He agrees.

The opening of the tailpipe shows very black , indicating an improper fuel mixture. He was told that a computer component was probably malfunctioning. I tend to agree. Now, my question is, is there any way to reset or reconfigure the fuel mixture without having to buy a new computer component, or what ever they call it? I am assuming that the component is quite expensive.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer this.

A. Well Teresa, there are a whole lot of computer components on that engine. But I think you must be thing about the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). That is the "brains" of the whole system.

But before you go and replace it, I would check to see if there are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in it first. Any codes stored will give you a good indication of where to start looking for a problem.

I would also check all the vacuum lines for cracks, breaks and connection. Another possibility is an intake manifold gasket getting sucked in. Spraying a little carburetor cleaner around the intake manifold gasket and listen for a change in idle rpm will indicate a leak.

Another possibility is the Manifold Pressure/Vacuum (MAP) Sensor. Chrysler had some problems with them and came out with an improved MAP sensor and hose kit. The kit is MAP Sensor Bleed Package and the part number is 4638820. If that is the problem Ask the dealer for a copy of TSB number NO.: 18-10-91 dated August 26, 1991.

There may, also, be a problem with the wastegate or wastegate actuator of the turbocharger.
