Questions and Answers
I maintained it well with fluid changes and such and had it tuned up replaced fuel and air filters, plugs, wires, Distributor cap and no real improvement. It runs like a champ when driving but idling is just low. When it starts to stumble I give it little gas and it revs back right. I have had it comp tested and the cat checked and both showed no problems. There is a whistling chirping sound when I start it cold it goes away after it warms up. It isn't speed sensitive I hear it at stop lights but while Driving you hear nothing. I love the truck it is a beaut but the problem has me worried it may be a problem that will keep getting worse and cause major repairs later. Any help would be great.
Funky Hardbody Idle
Q. Vince, I have a 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4 cyl 2 wd reg cab truck. I have babied it since I bought it new. It has a low idle at about 900 RPMs in Park and 500 - 600 in Drive. On rare occasions it bucks like a standard trying to stall and has stalled out on me twice.
Thanks,
WayneA. I suspect that the problem is in the IACV-ACC which controls the idle speed. What I would try is disconnect the battery cable for a few minutes and then try it. If the idle speed goes back to normal, about 800 rpm, then the computer "learned" something wrong and it should be okay. if it goes back to the low idle rpm, then the IACV-ACC system needs to be tested to locate the fault.
As for the chirping noise, I would look at the fan belts. I think you'll find they have a bunch of small cracks in them or possibly a chunk missing out of one. If you take some CRC5-56 and spray it on the belts while the engine is running, the noise will go away. This treatment will last about two minutes before the noise returns, but you'll know for sure it is the belts.
