Funky Ford Ranger Idle

Q. I have a 1988 Ford Ranger XLT, 2.9, 5 speed, 4x4, A/C, 163,000 miles. When I come to a stop, it will idle at around 1400 to 1500 rpm. After about 20 seconds it will drop to about 900 rpm or lower. Sometimes it will drop so low that it will stall out.

I have cleaned out the throttle body and replaced the wires, distributor cap, and plugs. Was wondering if it could be the TPS? If not, any other ideas?

A. This is a difficult problem to troubleshoot since there can be a few mechanical and electrical causes. A bad TPS is a possibility, there may be a problem with the Air Bypass Valve or Idle Speed Control Valve. There can also be a problem with the linkage or a decel device.

I wish I could be more specific, but this is one I would have to look at to be a little more sure of.
