Push Starting

Q. How do I push start my car? It is a 1991 Toyota Tercel, 2-door coupe, manual transmission, four cylinder, carburetor, A/C, with about 180,000 miles on it.

Thank you,
Jim

A. Well, the procedure in push starting any car with a manual transmission is the same. First, get a couple of guys to push the car. Then put the car in first gear and depress the clutch. Then turn the key to the ON position and get the guys to start pushing from the rear. When it's up to about five or ten mph, release the clutch and if everything is working with the engine, it will start.

I must caution you however, it is not recommended to push start a car unless it is absolutely necessary. It can be dangerous and can cause severe bodily injury. In addition the sudden starting of the engine could result in an accident.
