Chrysler Gas To Ford Diesel Engine

Q. Hi, My husband is a fairly good mechanic on both diesel and gas but he's hit a stump. We are retired truckers and bought a 1978 Dodge motor home in good condition except that it only gets 5 mpg with the big Chrysler 440. He bought a 1885 ¾-ton Ford pickup with an IHC 8 cylinder V-8 diesel with the intention of putting this motor and transmission into the motor home.

The motor will fit but he's been told that the wiring can't be made to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Marcie

A. This sounds like an interesting project Marcie, one I would like to get into. If he got the engine and transmission in, that was 90% of the battle. It's a diesel so the wiring should be fairly simple. There is no ignition system to worry about so all he needs to do is wire up the glow plugs and fuel shut off. The starter is a piece of cake, all he needs to do is find room for the second battery.

It's not impossible, it's just work. Look at it one circuit at a time and it won't seem so overwhelming. Go to the public library and they will have all the wiring diagrams that you need for the wiring. You have the other truck so you have the parts you need. All they need is to be mounted and hooked up. I say go for it.
