Mazda Check Engine Light

Q. Hi, I own a Mazda 626 1990 model. It has air conditioning, power steering, cruise control and fuel injection. I have one question, does this car have a check engine light? I don't think it does because it says nothing about a check engine light in the manual.

I am positive it is fuel injected and I am afraid there may be a problem with the fuel injection system but I don't think it has a check engine light to warn me. I may as well ask you if it is normal for the idle speed to fluctuate? On my car the idle speed fluctuates up and down about 100 rpm while i'm sitting at the lights. I can see the tachometer moving up and down. However this does not happen all the time and it NEVER happens when I have the A/C on. Any help would be very much appreciated. Please write back soon.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

A. Yes Ryan, that car does have a CHECK ENGINE light. It is on the instrument cluster, near the speedometer. The light should come on for three seconds with the key on as a bulb check and to let you know the system is on. If it doesn't light up with the key on, there are some possibilities.

The bulb may be burned out in which case you will need to replace it. The ECU is not sending a signal to the light or there is a wiring problem between the ECU and the light. Someone took the bulb out because it was easier and/or cheaper than fixing a problem. In any case I would have the circuit checked to see what the problem is. If you recently bought the car and the previous owner took the bulb out, a case for fraud can be made.

The idle fluctuation may be caused by a dirty throttle body or dirty injectors. I would try cleaning the throttle body and throttle plates with carburetor cleaner and maybe throw some injector cleaner in the gas tank. A lot of times that is all that is needed to fix a minor idle fluctuation such as yours.
