Leaking Mustang Rack
Q. Greetings, Vincent!! I sought your help at autorepair.about.com with a bad lift cylinder on my 1994 Mustang Convertible a while back. That replacement cost me $35.00 and about 90 minutes. Great job!
Now I have a problem with power steering fluid leaking from the rubber boot (driver side, one on each side) which is on the rod that moves the wheel--the steering rack boot--I think it's called, but I'm not sure. There is a groove on this rod, and the boot has a lip which fits into this groove, and is secured with a tension clamp. I tried placing a hose clamp on the end of the boot, but it still leaked. I think the lip on this boot isn't sealing the system. Is that what it's called, and can you give me the procedure for replacing this boot?
YOU'RE THE MAN, VINCE!!
Thanks!
MitchA. That boot you mention does nothing to seal the system. It's there to keep dirt off the rack piston and protect the seal that does the real sealing job. It is very common for this seal to leak on any car, not just Fords in particular. You can get a rebuild kit and replace all the seals in the rack and maybe it won't still leak when you're done. It is far more cost effective to just replace the whole rack assembly with a rebuilt unit. This way you won't have to worry if it will leak after you put it in.
