Volvo 850 Evaporators
Q. Regarding evaporators in the 850 series Volvo. We are experiencing a rather high failure rate here in Canada. We are trying to determine why. Also the metal composition of the evaporator, I guess it would be made of an aluminum alloy?? If you know the answers to my question that would be great if not could point me in the right direction?
A. You are correct, the evaporator is made of an aluminum alloy that has a surface coating which can occasionally give rise to a concrete-like odor. I don't know if this is the problem you are referring to, but I don't have any information regarding excessive leaking or other malfunctions of the evaporator.
If this odor is the cause of the replacement, the new evaporator should be treated with an odor eliminator before installing in the climate control system. This odor eliminator is Volvo part number1161454-2 and should be applied before installing to eliminate tho odor from recurring.
