Toyota Celica GT Blower Motor Speeds

Q. I am really stumped on this one! I have a 1988 Toyota Celica GT with A/C. I recently changed the control panel on the dash, which has controls for the blower fan, A/C, temperature control, mode settings etc. I put in the new control panel, from a junk yard, same year and make car. It worked fine initially, but the first time I drove the car I lost my two lowest blower fan settings.

I now only can use the blower fan on ¾ high and full blast. I have completely taken apart the dash trying to figure out the problem, but it is complex. When I use the two lowest settings I notice that power is getting directly to the fan, but there is no direct ground to the blower fan. When I add ground to the fan it starts running, but only on the highest setting??

How is the blower fan controlled in different settings?? Why could I have lost two settings, the low settings, at the same time?? I put the old control panel back on and the two low settings still don't work. These low settings are important unless I want to freeze on long trips with too much A/C. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Stumped

A. This car had two different systems in it, a push button type and a lever type. Fortunately the blower motor operates the same, almost, on both.

There is a blower motor resistor and a blower motor relay. Either one could be bad. Testing is different between the two types so I can't offer much help there. But since the blower motor relay is only about $12.00, part number 909870200483, I would just throw one in since your time to check it is worth more than that.

If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to go for the blower motor resistor, which is just to the left of the blower motor relay.
