Ranger Clutch Slipping?

Q. Dear Vincent, I am attending a school for automotive work and I am doing great, and hope to get a scholarship to college. Well my question for you is; I have a 1997 Ford Ranger 4X4, XLT, five speed.

The thing I am having a problem is with the drive line, when I am out four wheeling and I get in some deep snow, or maybe some mud, I go to give her some to get out, and there is a terrible smell coming from the truck, and it feels like the clutch is totally gone. But when I finally rock her out, I can spin the tires like nothing, and the clutch is great. Also I have started to notice that when I come to a stop and I go in first gear, the truck makes a "eer" kind of noise. I almost think the clutch is going. I am confused, but I hope you could help me out with the smell, cause that has me going haywire, and I'm not the only one, a friend had a Toyota that will do the same thing. So if you could give me some info, I would dearly enjoy what ever you could give me.

Thanks a lot,
Matt

A. It kind of sounds to me like the clutch is doing a little bit of slipping. The smell of burning clutch is a dead give away of that. The only thing that comes to mind is that the clutch pressure plate is weak and isn't applying enough pressure to the clutch disc. In this case the only thing you can do is replace the whole clutch assembly; disc, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.

As far as the noise goes, it could be due to the weak pressure plate or it might be indicative of another problem. Without actually hearing the sound it is impossible for me to try and give you any possibilities.
