Astro Spark Plugs

Q. Vince, I would like to know how to remove and replace the spark plugs in a 1992 Chevy Astro Van. Some manuals say they have to be reached from the side by removing the wheels, not so, I can't see the plugs.

The local repair shops want to charge a regular tune up fee $99.99 to change them.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
John

A. The Astro has some of the hardest spark plugs to replace on just about any car on the road. I cringe when I see one come in for a tune-up. Now I'm sure every mechanic has their own way to do it but they are a PITA to get to in any case.

One way to get to them is from underneath the car, a lot easier if the car is on a lift. Another way to do it involves a special tool. This tool replaces the front engine strut and has a long, threaded bolt that pulls the engine forward allowing access to the plugs from the top. You still need to crawl on top of the engine, but it makes it a lot easier. At no point will you be able to actually see the plugs, it's done more by feel than anything else. At any rate it's going to take some work and a lot of time to get to, and replace, them.
