Taurus Takes Too Long To Cool

Q. My air conditioning in my 1994 Ford Taurus, 3.0 liter engine, with 89,000 miles, has been giving me trouble. It started last year when the air stopped working one hot summer day. I though the freon ran out but then after driving on the highway later that day it suddenly sputtered back to life and continued to work for the rest of the summer, although not consistently blowing cold air.

Now, this summer, it stopped working altogether until again, I got on the highway and after about 30 minutes it sprang back to life again. So long story short, to add to this mechanical failure, I managed to hit a deer and do quite a bit of damage to my car and they ended up replacing the condenser on the car and had the air conditioner recharged also. It worked great for about three hours even off the highway. But after a long trip today it gave out again!!

One thing I did notice on the drive was the check engine light came on briefly so I pulled over and noticed clear liquid leaking from the upper left side of car (if you are facing the car's headlights) which slowed down after resting. Someone told me was it was the air conditioner condensation. But I thought that was more of dripping and not a steady stream, albeit light stream.

Any ideas what could be wrong? The mechanic who fixed my car said the compressor was sounding funny.

Help! I am sweltering here in Iowa and need some good advice.

Thanks!!
Rachael

A. If the compressor is making funny noises as your mechanic says, then it could be the cause of the problem. Although I have seen noisy A/C compressors last for years.

However, I don't think it's your compressor that's giving you trouble. The fact that water is coming out of the drain hole shows that the A/C is working. It is possible the vacuum motor for the heater core is bad and not closing off the heater core. I'm assuming all the other functions, floor, vent, defrost, are working normally. If this is the case you would get warm air no matter what.
