Grand Am Motor Mounts

Q. Dear Sir, I spent about 2 hours or so looking for a related subject to my question on the FAQ's but can't find anything. I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 1992 Grand Am 3.3 liter V-6 with 100,300 miles on it. I noticed that the engine moves severely when in park or drive and it jerks when I accelerate.

Upon inspection I noticed that the top motor mount had quite a few cracks on it so I asked a mechanic if replacing just that one would help smooth the engine out and he said that I had to replace all of the motor mounts because if that one is bad then the others are too, I think he said there were three in all.

So now I'm wondering if this is a DIY job or should I take it to the shop? Any advice? I've always worked on my car before with the help of a friend. And I took a look at the top and bottom mounts and well it doesn't appear to be that difficult, however I can't find the third mount unless he means the transmission mount. Well any advice is gratefully appreciated.

Thanks for your help,
Jose

A. There are three mounts all together, one on the front of the engine, one in the front of the car (Radiator side) and the transmission mount.

While they are not, for a skill point of view, hard to replace, it does involve a fair amount of work. The engine has to be supported while you change the mounts and you need to be able to raise and lower it. Since you probably don't have the GM engine support fixture, the next best thing would be to place a jack under the engine. You can jack up the engine under the oil pan, just make sure you have a piece of 2 x 4 between the jack and pan so you don't damage the pan.

I would suggest loosening all the mounts first, and replace each one at a time. A second pair of hands will come in handy because you'll have to move the engine around to get everything lined up. I see no reason why you can't do this yourself, just be aware that it does involve a bit of work and a certain amount of physical labor.
